The Decluttering Process
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Set aside 2-4 hours for initial decluttering. Gather boxes or bags labeled: Keep, Donate, Trash, Relocate. Put on energizing music and commit to finishing.
Step 2: Empty Everything
Remove all items from shelves, baskets, and surfaces. Seeing everything at once helps you realize how much you actually have and makes honest decisions easier.
Step 3: Sort by Category
Group similar items together: all toys, all books, all media, all throws. This reveals duplicates and helps you see what you really use.
Step 4: Apply the Keep Criteria
Keep items that are: Used regularly (monthly), In good condition, Age-appropriate, Bring joy or serve purpose. Be honest—guilt isn't a good reason to keep something.
Step 5: Make Quick Decisions
Don't overthink each item. If you hesitate more than 5 seconds, it's probably not essential. Trust your first instinct.
Step 6: Handle Sentimental Items
Take photos of sentimental items before donating. Keep the memory, not the clutter. Choose one special item per category to preserve.
Step 7: Remove Immediately
Take donation boxes to your car right away. Put trash out immediately. Don't let sorted items linger—they'll creep back into your space.
Step 8: Clean Before Reorganizing
Wipe shelves, vacuum baskets, and dust surfaces while they're empty. Start your organization with a fresh, clean slate.
